Exploring the Himalaya — from Last Five Decades and more

PAHAR is a nonprofit community archive preserving the voices, stories, and knowledge of the Himalayan region — its people, ecology, travel, and culture — for generations to come.

What is PAHAR?

PAHAR is a collective enterprise fueled by curiosity, hard work, and research—born from those who love the Himalaya. Rooted in Uttarakhand’s rich tradition of intellectual and social movements, especially Chipko, our community spans scientists, activists, writers, artists, and mountaineers. Though constrained often to the central Himalaya, we claim fierce fraternity with the Nilgiri, Satpura, Aravali, Alps, Andes—indeed, with every mountain on Earth.

PAHAR (People’s Association for Himalayan Area Research) is a nonprofit initiative preserving the cultural, environmental, and historical knowledge of the Himalaya. Through journal articles, travel accounts, photo essays, and research publications, we build an open, living record of Himalayan life—past and present. Published in English and Hindi, our archive serves researchers, activists, and mountain lovers alike. This is our emphatic commitment: to understand, share, and defend the Himalaya.
